A 24-year-old man named Sunday Asere has been sentenced to 14 years in prison by an Ekiti State High Court in Ado Ekiti Division.
He was found guilty of sexually assaulting a six-year-old girl.
Asere was charged with rape on March 22, 2022, for an incident that occurred in January 2020 at Moferere in Ado Ekiti. According to the charge, he raped the young girl, which is against Section 31(2) of the Child’s Rights Law in Ekiti State.
The victim, who was in primary one at the time, testified that Asere, their neighbor, would touch her private parts when her mother was not around. She endured pain but did not tell her mother due to her harshness. She eventually confided in her father after another incident on January 14, 2020, and he reported it to the police.
During the trial, the prosecutor presented six witnesses and evidence including the defendant’s statements and a medical report. Asere chose not to present any witnesses in his defense.
Justice Adekunle Adeleye delivered the judgment, noting that while medical examination showed signs of sexual abuse, there was no evidence of vaginal penetration. However, based on the circumstances, the court found Asere guilty of sexual assault and sentenced him to 14 years in prison.
