A Scottish court has sentenced 26-year-old Nigerian national Osarenkhoe Atutie to seven and a half years in prison after he admitted attempting to k!ll his estranged wife during a violent knife attack in Edinburgh
The incident occurred in November 2025 on Duke Street in the Leith area of the city, where Atutie confronted his estranged wife, Victory Atutie, while she was out with their young daughter.
The High Court in Edinburgh heard that after briefly embracing his daughter, Atutie launched a brutal attack, stabbing the 30-year-old woman multiple times.
Victory sustained 12 stab wounds, including injuries that caused a collapsed lung and permanent facial scars. She survived after members of the public intervened, disarmed the attacker and restrained him until police arrived.
While delivering judgment, Lord Cubie described the assault as a prolonged attack on a vulnerable and defenceless victim. He also issued a lifelong non-contact order preventing Atutie from contacting Victory after completing his prison sentence.
The court was told that the couple got married in Nigeria about four years before the incident before relocating to London, where they welcomed their daughter. Following the collapse of the marriage, Victory moved to Edinburgh with the child.
According to the judge, Atutie later located them in Edinburgh, showing what he described as a level of planning before carrying out the attack.
“She could have died. It was plainly through a combination of luck and the intervention of passers-by that she survived,” Lord Cubie said.
“They bravely disarmed you and held you until police arrived. They are to be commended.”
The judge added that the attack had permanently affected Victory’s wellbeing, daily life and sense of safety.
The court heard that Victory was pushing her daughter in a pram to a GP surgery when the child noticed Atutie and excitedly shouted, “Daddy, daddy.”
After seeing him, Victory became frightened. Prosecutors said Atutie told her he was carrying a knife and demanded that she follow him before grabbing her by the hair and repeatedly stabbing her in the head and body.
Three bystanders rushed to her rescue, overpowering Atutie and holding him until officers arrived at the scene.
Victory was admitted to hospital, where she spent four days receiving treatment for her injuries.
