Manchester United have reached an agreement in principle to appoint Michael Carrick as their interim head coach
Carrick, 44, emerged as the leading candidate after the club held talks with him and former manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer about taking charge until the end of the season.

Sources say Carrick became the focus of discussions on Monday, and he was seen arriving at the club’s training ground on Tuesday ahead of finalising the deal.
Carrick is expected to bring in former England assistant manager Steve Holland, with Jonathan Woodgate, Jonny Evans, and Travis Binnion also joining his backroom staff. Former United midfielder Darren Fletcher, who oversaw the last two matches, was offered a role in Carrick’s team but has chosen to return to his position as Under-18s manager.
The former United captain previously served as caretaker manager for three games following Solskjaer’s departure in late 2021, winning two and drawing one, before Ralf Rangnick took over for the remainder of that season.
Carrick, who made 464 appearances for United across a 12-year playing career, won five Premier League titles and a Champions League trophy. After leaving Manchester United’s coaching staff, he was appointed Middlesbrough manager in October 2022, leading the club to the Championship play-offs in his first season before being dismissed last summer.
Official confirmation of Carrick’s interim appointment is expected later on Tuesday.
