Menopause symptoms are forcing many women out of their jobs due to inadequate support from employers. Many workers on menopause are quitting their jobs due to a lack of support

Madhu Kapoor, a 58-year-old from north London, resigned from her government job after 23 years due to debilitating symptoms of perimenopause. Despite her dedication, Kapoor struggled with night sweats, migraines, and a loss of confidence at work. When she sought support from her leadership team, she found little understanding or assistance.

A late 2023 survey by SimplyHealth revealed that 23% of working women aged 40 to 60 considered resigning due to menopause-related issues, with 14% planning to leave their jobs. The lack of workplace support exacerbates financial losses due to sick days and missed opportunities.

Employers are beginning to recognize the need for menopause-specific support programs, but change is slow. Only a quarter of women surveyed by Korn Ferry received formal workplace assistance, while many reported feeling unable to discuss menopause symptoms openly.

The taboo surrounding menopause, compounded by ageism and a male-dominated leadership, silences women struggling with symptoms. Companies like Adobe and Bank of America are leading the way with menopause benefits, but more comprehensive support is needed to retain experienced workers like Kapoor.

Advocates like Tamsen Fadal and Lauren Chiren are pushing for change, offering education and resources to both women and employers. With greater awareness and support, menopausal workers could remain in their jobs and contribute effectively to the workforce.
