Femi Afolabi-Brown believes men who choose to practise polygamy should wait years not just a few years, but decades before marrying a second wife.
According to the husband of media personality Morayo Brown, taking another wife too soon after the first is a recipe for conflict because both women are likely to be in the same phase of life, creating room for rivalry within the family.
He argued that if a man marries his first wife at 25, he should wait until about 50 before marrying again. That way, he said, the children from the first marriage would already be grown and naturally become older siblings, or even aunties and uncles, to the younger children.
“There can never be rivalry between them because they are not in the same generation,” he said.
Afolabi-Brown also maintained that marrying a second wife just a few years into the first marriage almost guarantees unrest at home.
“If your first wife you married in the first year of marriage, by the third year you marry the second one, your house will be the house of commotion. There is nothing you can do to escape it,” he said.
He added that it often takes about 10 years for a husband and wife to fully align on a shared purpose. Once that foundation has been built, he noted that a first wife is more likely to accept the decision if her husband marries again for what he described as a greater purpose
