The Federal Government has reaffirmed that Mathematics remains a compulsory subject for all students sitting for O-Level examinations across the country
This clarification was made in a statement issued on Sunday by Boriowo Folashade, spokesperson for the Federal Ministry of Education, following public confusion over earlier reports suggesting that students in the arts and humanities would no longer be required to present a credit in Mathematics for tertiary admissions.

Earlier in the week, Boriowo had announced a review of admission guidelines, stating that candidates in certain programmes might not need credit passes in English or Mathematics to gain admission. The update sparked widespread debate among education stakeholders, with critics warning that the policy could weaken academic standards and discourage students from taking the subjects seriously.
However, in her latest statement, Boriowo clarified that all students must still register and sit for both English Language and Mathematics in their O-Level exams, regardless of their intended course of study.
She explained that the reform only applies to admission criteria, not examination requirements. “This adjustment affects only admission criteria, not the requirement to take these subjects,” she said.
According to the ministry, the move aligns with the Federal Government’s broader goal of promoting equitable access, inclusivity, and human capital development in education.
“English and Mathematics remain vital tools for communication, reasoning, and lifelong learning,” the statement added.
The ministry urged students, parents, and the general public to rely only on official government channels for verified policy information to avoid misinterpretation of its educational reforms.
When asked if the clarification meant the government had reversed its earlier decision, Boriowo responded, “No, it’s not a U-turn — it’s simply a clarification to streamline admission requirements and expand access to tertiary education.”
