The Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM) has confirmed the release of a group of Nigerian girls who were recently detained in Mauritius, saying they are currently on their way back to Nairobi
The commission announced the development on Monday, days after a viral social media video sparked widespread concern and calls for the Federal Government to intervene in their situation.
The video, shared on Instagram by user #Queenbethia, alleged that the girls had been held at Mauritius Airport since July 31, 2026, and appealed to relevant authorities for urgent action.
In a statement issued by its Digital Media Unit, NiDCOM confirmed that the girls had regained their freedom.
“The Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM) wishes to inform the public that the Nigerian girls who were previously detained have been released.
“They are currently on their way back to Nairobi,” the commission said.
NiDCOM also disclosed that its Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, Abike Dabiri-Erewa, was working through the appropriate diplomatic channels to ensure the matter was thoroughly addressed.
According to the commission, the relevant Nigerian mission has formally engaged the authorities in Mauritius over the incident.
“The Chairman/CEO of NiDCOM, Hon. Abike Dabiri-Erewa, is actively engaging the relevant Nigerian Embassy who have formally taken up this matter with the authorities of the country concerned, to ensure full accountability and prevent any recurrence,” the statement added.
The commission reiterated its commitment to safeguarding the interests of Nigerians abroad, describing the intervention as part of the Federal Government’s efforts to prioritise citizens’ welfare.
While confirming the girls’ release, the commission did not reveal their identities or provide details of the circumstances that led to their detention in Mauritius.
It also did not indicate when they are expected to arrive in Nairobi or return to Nigeria.
