Michael B. Jordan won the Best Actor award at the Academy Awards on Sunday for his performance in the vampire-themed drama Sinners
At 39, Jordan joins an elite list of Black actors who have won the prestigious Best Actor Oscar, including Sidney Poitier, Denzel Washington, Forest Whitaker and Will Smith.
Jordan’s performance saw him portray twin brothers confronting dark supernatural forces in a story blending horror with themes of race and segregation. His victory came after building momentum from a recent win at the Screen Actors Guild Awards two weeks earlier.

In the category, he beat strong contenders including Timothée Chalamet for Marty Supreme, Leonardo DiCaprio for One Battle After Another, Wagner Moura for The Secret Agent and Ethan Hawke for Blue Moon.
During an emotional acceptance speech, Jordan dedicated the award to the actors who paved the way before him. “I stand here because of the people who came before me,” he said.
