A man reported missing has been found inside a crocodile in northeastern Australia, police announced on Tuesday
The 40-year-old man disappeared on Saturday afternoon after a suspected crocodile attack near the Annan River Bridge in Far North Queensland.
“Formal identification is underway, but it is believed that the remains are of the missing 40-year-old New South Wales man,” stated Queensland police.
“Further testing will confirm the positive identity.”
The search and rescue operation for the man has been halted.
On Monday, a Queensland Department of Environment, Science, and Innovation spokesperson informed local media that a large crocodile, believed to be responsible for the fatal attack, was humanely euthanized.
The crocodile, about five meters long, was found approximately four kilometers from where the man went missing and identified by distinctive markings on its snout. It was believed to be decades old.
Australian media reported that the man had visited the popular fishing spot with his wife and children.
Authorities are also investigating social media claims that people were seen feeding crocodiles near the accident site.
