More Yahoo People in Government Than Youths - Peter Obi

Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s presidential candidate in the 2023 elections, has criticized the Bola Tinubu-led administration for protecting corrupt officials, whom he referred to as “Yahoo people.”

He emphasized that it is time for the youth to challenge the status quo and take action to shape the future through leadership driven by character, innovation, and a commitment to change.

In his keynote address at the 4th Graduation ceremony of Nexford University, Obi expressed deep concern over the nation’s condition, pointing out that it has become a hub for both internal and external corruption. Speaking on the theme “Lead the Change; Ignite Your Future,” Obi stated that the political elite has turned the country into a crime scene, with theft happening both within and outside of government.

“When we talk about vices, don’t think it’s just the Yahoo boys. There are more Yahoo people in government than outside it. We’ve turned this country into a crime scene, where both those inside and outside government are stealing,” Obi said. He stressed that leadership is about igniting the future, requiring strong character and the ability to make the right choices.

While reflecting on the importance of leadership and youth empowerment for a better future, Obi urged the graduates to be catalysts for positive change in their communities. “You have gained knowledge today. Use it to drive societal change,” he told the students. “Your education equips you to help create a better environment in the society where you want to live.”

Obi also acknowledged the challenges faced by young Nigerians, stating that they are victims of a broken system due to the failure of previous generations to act correctly. He added, “Our generation and those before us have refused to do what is right. As a result, you are bearing the consequences.”

The former governor of Anambra State emphasized the critical role of young people in transforming Nigeria and called on them to use their education and skills to lead with integrity, ensuring that the nation is built on accountability and progress.
