Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates has revealed that he plans to leave less than 1% of his vast fortune to his children, stressing the importance of them forging their own paths rather than relying on inherited wealth
Speaking on the Figuring Out With Raj Shamani podcast, Gates explained that his children have already benefited from an excellent upbringing and education. His goal, he said, is to provide them with opportunities while encouraging them to achieve their own successes.
With a net worth estimated at $162 billion by the Bloomberg Billionaires Index, Gates believes giving them less will help them develop their own identities.
“It’s not a dynasty. I’m not asking them to run Microsoft. I want to give them a chance to have their own earnings and success,” he stated.
He further explained that his decision is driven by a desire to ensure his children are not overshadowed by the “incredible luck and good fortune” he has experienced.
“You don’t want your kids to ever be confused about your support and love for them. So I do think explaining early on your philosophy—that you’re going to treat them equally and give them incredible opportunities—but that the highest calling for these resources is to go back to the neediest through the foundation,” Gates said.
Although his children will inherit only a small fraction of his wealth, Gates noted that even 1% of his fortune still amounts to over a billion dollars, ensuring they remain financially secure.
The billionaire has long championed philanthropy, primarily through the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, which focuses on global health, poverty alleviation, and education.
