Former Attorney General of the Federation, Abubakar Malami, has taken legal action against the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), contesting the interim forfeiture of properties allegedly linked to him
In court documents filed at the Federal High Court of Nigeria, Malami argued that the assets targeted under a January 2026 forfeiture order were lawfully acquired through his legal career, private business activities, and declared sources of income.

The EFCC had obtained the interim order on the suspicion that the properties were proceeds of crime, but Malami insisted the agency failed to establish any direct link between the assets and criminal conduct, describing its claims as baseless.
“There is no document before the court showing these properties were acquired with proceeds of crime.”
He also accused the commission of exaggerating the worth of the properties to support its case, alleging that items bought for hundreds of millions of naira were presented as being valued in billions, contrary to independent assessments.
According to him, his wealth stems from over 30 years in legal practice, alongside investments in sectors such as hospitality, agriculture and education. He added that other sources include bank loans, asset disposals, gifts and proceeds from book launches, all of which he said were properly declared to the Code of Conduct Bureau.
Malami further alleged that EFCC operatives acted outside the law by seizing properties without a final forfeiture order, evicting occupants and taking away documents, which he described as a breach of due process.
The matter, which is tied to an ongoing criminal case against him, is expected to examine the limits of the EFCC’s forfeiture powers and whether due process was followed.
He is asking the court to nullify the interim forfeiture, maintaining that the properties are legitimate and have no connection to any unlawful activity.
