The Niger State Government has ordered the immediate closure of all public and private primary and secondary schools across the state following the abduction of pupils at St Mary’s Catholic School in Papiri, Agwara Local Government Area
Governor Umaru Bago announced the directive on Saturday after a security meeting with heads of security agencies.

A statement by his Chief Press Secretary, Bologi Ibrahim, said: “Governor Umaru Bago, shortly after meeting with security chiefs over the recent kidnapping at St Mary’s Catholic School, Papiri, directed that all Missionary, Islamic schools, and Federal Government Colleges be shut down until further notice. All tertiary institutions in Niger North Senatorial District and other vulnerable areas of Niger East Senatorial District are also to remain closed.”
Governor Bago urged security agencies, civil society organizations, religious leaders, and labour groups to prioritize the rescue of the abducted pupils, emphasizing the government’s commitment to safeguarding lives and property. He described the incident as “sad and unfortunate” and said efforts are ongoing to ensure the safe return of all victims.
He added that the exact number of abducted pupils is still being determined, as the Department of State Services (DSS), police, and other security agencies conduct a headcount.
The move follows similar actions by Katsina and Plateau states, which closed schools amid rising banditry attacks. The federal government has also ordered the immediate closure of all 47 Unity Colleges nationwide, citing “recent security challenges in some parts of the country and the need to prevent any security breaches.”
