Nigeria was on life support when Tinubu assumed office – Akpabio

Senate President and Chairman of the 10th National Assembly, Senator Godswill Akpabio, has likened Nigeria’s state in May 2023 to being on “life support” when President Bola Tinubu assumed office

Speaking at his 2024 Constituency Briefing and Empowerment Programme at the Ikot Ekpene Township Stadium, Akpabio, representing Akwa Ibom Northwest Senatorial District, urged Nigerians to back the President’s economic reforms.

“Nigeria was on life support,” Akpabio said, emphasizing the urgency of Tinubu’s measures, such as removing fuel subsidies, floating the naira, and introducing tax reforms.

Recounting a conversation with Tinubu about the economy’s state, Akpabio shared, “I once asked him, ‘Are you excited about being president after seeing the economy left behind by Emefiele?’ He replied, ‘I didn’t know it was this bad.’”

Despite challenges, Akpabio expressed optimism in Tinubu’s leadership, drawing parallels with his successful tenure as Lagos State governor. “You did it in Lagos, and you will do it again for Nigeria. It’s just a matter of time,” he said.

Akpabio also addressed beneficiaries of his empowerment programme, urging them to use their tools for economic advancement and not sell them. “We have enough foodstuff to distribute; there should be no stampede. These items extend beyond Ikot Ekpene to other senatorial districts,” he assured.

The Senate President commended Akwa Ibom Governor Umo Eno for fostering peace and inclusivity, stating, “Without peace, there cannot be development. The governor has embraced all Akwa Ibom people, regardless of political affiliations.”

Akpabio also lauded Senate Minority Leader Abba Moro for promoting unity in the Senate, noting, “Opposition is good, but it should be constructive.”

Senator Moro praised Akpabio’s leadership, saying, “It takes wisdom to give people lasting benefits rather than instant gratification.”

The event was attended by key figures, including Minister of Petroleum Resources (Gas) Obongemem Ekperikpo Ekpo, APC Chieftain Senator Ita Enang, Senator Ekong Sampson, and traditional rulers from the region.

In his closing remarks, Akpabio emphasized collective efforts to build a better Nigeria and reaffirmed his commitment to impactful development for his constituents.
