Igbojionu’s ordeal began when he purchased a generator, unaware that it would lead to a chain of events that would cost him nearly three decades of his life. Accused of receiving stolen property, he was arrested, tried alongside two others, and sentenced to d3ath in 2003 by a court in Ogun State.

For over two decades, he remained locked up at Kirikiri Maximum Security Prison in Lagos, his case buried and forgotten — until the intervention of a concerned citizen changed everything.

A social media post by influencer Olumide Ogunsanwo (Sea King) drew attention to Igbojionu’s case, prompting human rights lawyer Simon Oshi to investigate. What he found was shocking: a man condemned over a non-violent, questionable charge, rotting on death row without justice.

The case soon reached Abia State Governor Alex Otti, who acted swiftly. Through collaboration with legal authorities in Ogun and Lagos States, the governor helped secure Igbojionu’s release.

Upon regaining his freedom, Igbojionu was welcomed at the Abia State Government House. Governor Otti not only celebrated his release but also pledged full support for his recovery and reintegration.

“Igbojionu’s story is a painful reminder of the cracks in our justice system,” Otti said. “But it’s also proof that justice can still prevail when we act with courage and compassion.”

Now a free man, Igbojionu has become a symbol of endurance and a sobering example of why legal reforms are urgently needed in Nigeria’s criminal justice system.
