During his visit to Benue State following the recent massacre in Yelwata, President Bola Tinubu made a pointed political statement, addressing the realities of leadership in a deeply polarized climate

Speaking at a stakeholders’ meeting in Makurdi, Tinubu acknowledged that political leadership often comes with intense scrutiny and hostility—even from the people one is elected to serve.
“Not everybody will like you in politics. They hate me like hell, too. Well, I’m here. I am the president, another democratic regime,” Tinubu declared.
He went on to emphasize that, despite the attacks and insults he receives, he remains committed to upholding democratic values and protecting all Nigerians—regardless of their stance toward him.
“I made a promise. I will protect my abusers and accusers with the principle of democracy, freedom, and prosperity. I will protect them. Abuse me all you want. You must take that.”
Tinubu’s remarks come at a time when criticism of his administration has intensified, particularly over the government’s handling of insecurity in parts of the country. However, his statement in Benue reflects an attempt to rise above political divisions by reinforcing the idea that democracy must work for both allies and adversaries.
