Open your toilets to the public - Lagos Govt tells organizations

The Lagos State Government has called on organizations and companies like banks, eateries, filling stations, and other private businesses to allow members of the public use their restrooms as part of efforts to tackle open defecation and improve hygiene across the state.

This appeal comes as the government revealed it has already installed 1,710 public toilets in key areas around Lagos, but noted that this alone is not enough to meet the needs of the city’s fast-growing population.

The Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, stated on Saturday that stronger collaboration with the private sector is necessary to expand access to sanitation facilities.

“The government cannot do this alone. We are encouraging businesses such as filling stations, banks, eateries, and other public-facing facilities to make their restrooms accessible to the public where possible,” he said.

He explained that allowing public access to private restrooms would significantly reduce cases of indiscriminate defecation in public spaces.
