Leaders of Nigeria’s opposition parties have voiced strong opposition to the recently amended Electoral Act 2026, signed into law by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu
The coalition, which includes former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar and top figures from major opposition parties, criticized both the substance of the law and the way it was passed by the National Assembly.

Speaking at a press conference, Ajuri Ahmed of the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) accused the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) of using the amendments to position President Tinubu as the dominant candidate for the 2027 elections.
Ahmed questioned the inclusion of manual vote collation provisions in the act, noting that current technology allows results to be transmitted directly from every polling unit. He also expressed concern over the unusually swift signing of the bill, which he said was faster than other recent legislation.
Highlighting the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) elections as a case in point, Ahmed argued that the rushed process revealed flaws in the system. The opposition leaders rejected the FCT Area Council poll results, describing them as a litmus test that exposed the challenges faced by the new Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) Chairman in managing credible elections.
