Osun State Commissioner for Environment and Sanitation, Mayowa Adejorin, has regained his freedom after spending nearly a day in police custody over a sho.oting incident in Ilesa
The commissioner was detained after police officers investigating the sho.oting stopped a white Lexus 350 allegedly carrying an Amotekun operative and another passenger.
The incident happened during an All Progressives Congress (APC) campaign rally in Ilesa West Local Government Area. Police said some individuals identified as Amotekun personnel reportedly came out of a vehicle with registration number OSHAO4 and opened fire.
Three people were injured, including 14-year-old Tobi Ilesanmi, who was reportedly hit by a bullet around the Isokun area.
Police said four spent cartridges and a pump-action firearm were recovered during the investigation.
Following the shooting, tactical officers intercepted Adejorin’s vehicle and took the commissioner, the Amotekun operative and another occupant to the police headquarters in Osogbo for questioning.
The police spokesperson, Abiodun Ojelabi, confirmed Adejorin’s release on Sunday, explaining that the commissioner was freed after being questioned by investigators.
“The commissioner has been released. He was released today but the Amotekun that was arrested with him, I can’t confirm his release yet because I am still gathering my facts,” Ojelabi said.
Explaining how the commissioner was identified after the vehicle was intercepted, the police spokesperson added:
“On intercepting the vehicle, they saw an Amotekun personnel in the vehicle. So they apprehended the vehicle, the personnel and one other person in the vehicle. They brought them straight to the headquarters here. On interrogation, it was discovered that the other occupant is Honourable Mayowa Adejorin.”
