President Bola Tinubu has approved the recruitment of 1,000 forest guards in Oyo State as part of efforts to strengthen security following the abduction of pupils and teachers in Oriire Local Government Area

The president announced the decision on his X account, stating that the recruitment would be carried out in collaboration with the Oyo State Government after a high-level Federal Government delegation visited the affected Esiele and Yawota communities.

“At my direction, following the visit of a high-level Federal Government delegation that I sent to the Esiele and Yawota communities in Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State, I have approved the recruitment of 1,000 forest guards in collaboration with the Oyo State Government,” Tinubu wrote.

The president also disclosed that he had ordered the deployment of a specialised security unit with advanced rescue capabilities to intensify efforts aimed at securing the release of the abducted pupils and teachers.

In addition, Tinubu said the request by residents for the establishment of a military base in the area is receiving urgent consideration from the Federal Government.

“I share the pain and anxiety of the affected families. No child should be taken from the safety of a classroom. No parent should have to endure this anguish,” the president stated.

The move comes after gunmen abducted dozens of pupils and teachers from three schools in Oriire Local Government Area on May 15, prompting widespread outrage and calls for stronger action against insecurity in the state.
