Human rights advocate and social commentator VeryDarkMan has renewed attention on the fate of dozens of schoolchildren and their teachers who remain in captivity following their a.bduction in May 2026 in Oyo State.
In a video posted on his page, he alleged that the Oyo State Government paid a ransom in an attempt to secure the freedom of the victims but claimed the kidnappers failed to release them despite the reported payment.
According to him, 39 children and seven teachers were abducted in Orire Local Government Area on 15 May 2026. He said the victims have now spent nearly 50 days in captivity, with many families still waiting anxiously for news of their loved ones.
VeryDarkMan also recalled that during a protest held on 17 June 2026, concerned Nigerians gathered in Oyo State to demand urgent action.
He said the state governor assured demonstrators that efforts were underway to secure the victims’ release, but lamented that the children and teachers have yet to regain their freedom.
“It is alleged that the Oyo State Government paid a ransom to secure the release of the 39 children and seven teachers.”
He continued:
“Despite the alleged payment, the kidnappers still refused to release them. As of today, they have spent exactly 49 days in captivity.”
Expressing concern over what he described as fading public attention, VeryDarkMan questioned whether security agencies were giving the incident the urgency it deserved.
He noted that many Nigerians believe government institutions, including the Department of State Services, the Nigeria Police Force, and the military, have shifted more focus toward preparations for the 2027 general elections, though he provided no evidence to support that claim.
Looking ahead to the 50th day since the abduction, he appealed to Nigerians not to forget the victims, emphasizing that several of the children are very young.
“Tomorrow marks 50 days since those children were taken into the bush. Some of them are less than 10 years old, while others are not even 4 years old.”
He ended his message with a question directed at the public:
“Are we really going to move on?”
