Governors elected under the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, have unanimously decided not to join any coalition or merger as the 2027 elections approach
This decision was made during the PDP Governors’ Forum meeting in Ibadan, Oyo State, which was attended by prominent governors such as Bala Mohammed of Bauchi, Peter Mbah of Enugu, Agbu Kefas of Taraba, Dauda Lawal of Zamfara, Seyi Makinde of Oyo, Caleb Mutfwang of Plateau, Umaru Fintiri of Adamawa, Ademola Adeleke of Osun, and Douye Diri of Bayelsa. Governors Sheriff Oborevwori of Delta and Umo Eno of Akwa Ibom were represented by their deputies.
In a communiqué delivered by the forum’s Chairman, Governor Bala Mohammed of Bauchi, the governors addressed the “nationwide speculations about possible mergers of parties, groups, and/or associations.” The forum affirmed its position that it would not join any coalition or merger. The communiqué also emphasized that the PDP, as the primary opposition party, remains open to welcoming other parties, individuals, or groups who wish to join with the goal of securing power and establishing good leadership in 2027.
The governors also reaffirmed their stance regarding the national secretary of the party, reiterating a previous position taken in Asaba. They recommended that the deputy secretary temporarily serve as national secretary until a substantive secretary from the Southeast zone is nominated and ratified in the next meeting.
In expressing solidarity with the suspended Governor of Rivers State, Siminalayi Fubara, the forum pledged to support him through the challenges arising from the declaration of a state of emergency in Rivers.
Addressing the worsening security situation in the country, especially in Borno, Katsina, and Edo States, the forum voiced alarm. They called for a “review and reorientation of priorities and strategies” to address security breaches through a bottom-up approach. The governors condemned the recent attacks in Plateau State and extended their condolences to the state’s government and residents, especially those who lost lives and property.
Looking forward, the forum announced a meeting on May 27, 2025, to form a zoning committee. The committee will be chaired by Governor Douye Diri, with Governor Dauda Lawal as Vice Chairman and Governor Caleb Mutfwang as Secretary. The committee will handle party office allocations in preparation for the convention scheduled for August 28-30, 2025, in Kano.
The forum concluded by expressing gratitude to the host governor, Seyi Makinde, and the people of Oyo State for their hospitality.
