The Labour Party has stated that its 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, cannot return to contest the 2027 general election on its platform, citing internal rules and electoral guidelines
The party’s interim national chairman, Senator Nenadi Usman, made this known during an interview on Arise Television, where she explained that the party’s nomination procedures and membership registration process do not allow late entries ahead of elections.

According to her, the Labour Party is required to close its membership register before primaries and submit the updated electronic register to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), in line with electoral regulations.
“Once we close the register 21 days before primaries, submit the register, the e-register to INEC, you can’t come from behind the door for us to register you and for you to contest the elections. That would be impossible, legally impossible anyway,” she said.
