Peter Obi, the 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate, has donated ₦20 million to the Faculty of Dentistry at the University of Calabar (UNICAL) to support 400 dental students at risk of expulsion due to accreditation issues
The donation, made public on Thursday, July 24, 2025, is intended to help the faculty acquire critical equipment needed to meet the standards of the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria (MDCN). UNICAL had reportedly over-admitted students without the required facilities, triggering a threat to its accreditation status.
Obi, in a statement shared on X, reaffirmed his commitment to education and the welfare of students, stating: “No student should be denied education due to institutional failures.”
The gesture has drawn widespread praise. The Faculty of Dentistry expressed deep appreciation, describing the donation as a major step toward securing its accreditation and safeguarding the future of its students.
The university has begun steps to procure the needed equipment, with further updates expected by August 15, 2025.
