Obi was accompanied by former Minister of Finance Nenadi Usman and Dr. Yunusa Tanko. The delegation was received by Deputy Governor Yakubu Garba, who stood in for Governor Mohammed Umaru Bago.

Describing the scene as “heartbreaking,” Obi highlighted the tragic toll of the disaster—over 200 lives lost, nearly 1,000 people still missing, more than 3,000 displaced, and countless homes and properties destroyed.

He revealed that while he was abroad in the UK, he had already reached out via phone to Governor Bago to express his condolences.

Taking to his X (formerly Twitter) handle, Obi wrote:
“This incident and others happening across the country affect us all. As a nation, we must come together to care, comfort, and support one another, especially in times of collective grief and hardship.”

He commended the state government and local emergency responders for their swift and courageous efforts, while calling on the Federal Government, relevant agencies, and well-meaning Nigerians to urgently provide aid to the affected areas.

In a gesture of support, Obi announced a personal donation of N20 million to assist the victims and bolster ongoing relief efforts. He also pledged continued support for the recovery and rebuilding process.

“May God comfort the families of the deceased, protect those still missing, and grant healing and strength to all affected. I pray Niger State finds peace and full restoration,” he added.

The flood, considered one of the deadliest in Niger State’s recent history, has sparked national concern and renewed calls for a more coordinated and proactive disaster management system across Nigeria.
