Kebbi Police warn against protests over Kebbi schoolgirls abduction

The Kebbi State Police Command has cautioned groups and civil society organisations against holding any protest over the recent abduction of students from Government Girls Comprehensive Secondary School, Maga, saying the current security situation is too fragile for public demonstrations.

In a statement on Friday, the Police Public Relations Officer, CSP Nafiu Kotarkoshi, said intelligence reports showed that some groups and NGOs were already mobilising to stage a protest “any moment from today.”

Kotarkoshi said the command understands the pain and frustration of the families and the public, but warned that a protest at this time could escalate tension and interfere with ongoing rescue operations.

“The current situation is dicey for any protest or rally to hold, as it has the potential of instigating violence in the state. While we remain deeply concerned about the regrettable incident, it is misguided and counterproductive for any protest to hold, as it will undermine the unwavering commitment of the combined security team working tirelessly to rescue the kidnapped schoolgirls unhurt,” the statement said.

The command reaffirmed its commitment to safeguarding lives and property, assuring residents that security agencies are intensifying efforts to ensure the safe rescue of the abducted students.

Kotarkoshi urged residents to remain calm, cooperate with security operatives, and promptly report any suspicious movement or person to the nearest police station.

Armed men had earlier invaded the school in the Danko-Wasagu area this week, abducting several students—a development that has triggered public concern and renewed calls for stronger security measures across schools in the North-West.
