Pope Leo XIV has announced that he will undergo surgery in the coming days after doctors discovered a small nodule in his lung during recent medical examinations.

The Pope made the announcement on Sunday, October 11, 2026, while addressing the faithful gathered in St. Peter’s Square at the Vatican for his weekly Angelus prayer.

Explaining the situation, he said:

“During some recent medical examinations, doctors found a small, localized nodule in my lung. It was detected at a very early stage and is well-localized. The doctors believe surgery is appropriate. Following their advice, I have therefore decided to undergo an operation to remove it. The operation is already scheduled for the coming days. I thank you for your spiritual closeness and entrust myself to your prayers.”

According to Vatican News, the nodule was discovered at an early stage, and doctors have recommended surgery to remove it.

The operation is expected to take place at Rome’s Gemelli Hospital. Vatican officials have indicated that his recovery could require a hospital stay of about a week.

The Pope concluded his announcement by thanking those who have kept him in their thoughts and prayers as he prepares for the procedure.
