Yunusa Ahmadu Yusuf, popularly known as Buhun Barkonun, has d!ed in Abuja after a hotel encounter with a woman
The 47-year-old, who was the Senior Special Assistant on Community Development to the Chairman of Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC), Christopher Zakka Maikalangu, reportedly lodged at a hotel in the Karu-Jikwoyi area of the FCT on Tuesday, September 8, 2025, alongside a woman identified as Ruth.
According to SaharaReporters, Yusuf declined meals during his stay but consumed large quantities of alcohol. On the morning of his death, Ruth allegedly purchased an energy drink for him after observing his deteriorating condition. Shortly after taking it, Yusuf collapsed and went into a coma. He was rushed to a nearby hospital by Ruth and hotel staff but was pronounced dead on arrival.
Police authorities have opened an investigation to ascertain the exact cause of death.
Buhun Barkonun was widely recognized as one of the strongest critics of the #EndSARS movement of October 2020. The nationwide protest, which lasted more than two weeks, called for the dissolution of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS), a police unit infamous for brutality, extrajudicial killings, and corruption.
During the height of the protests, Yusuf penned a letter to then-Inspector General of Police, Mohammed Adamu, urging demonstrators to vacate major roads in Abuja. Speaking for the Indigenous People of the FCT, he warned that the protests were severely disrupting social and economic activities and risked sparking unrest among local residents.
