Prof Carol Umobi officially started her role as the acting Vice Chancellor of Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, on Monday.
The transition ceremony, held at the VC’s office, included a formal handover from the former acting Vice Chancellor, Prof Joe Ikechebelu. He was removed by the university council led by Chairman Amb. Greg Mbadiwe over the weekend.
Despite initial uncertainties during the council meeting, Amb. Mbadiwe issued a six-month appointment letter to Umobi before leaving the university.
Speaking to journalists after the handover, Dr Emma Ojukwu, the Special Adviser to the Vice Chancellor on Media, clarified that Umobi’s term as acting VC will not be extended beyond six months, and she will not compete for the permanent VC position.
Ojukwu emphasized that Prof Ikechebelu, who temporarily oversaw the university as Deputy VC administration, is not considered an acting VC. He has returned to his previous role.
The university council, newly constituted, fulfilled its initial task by appointing Umobi as acting VC. They have ensured fairness by allowing potential candidates for the substantive VC position to compete without holding an acting role.
The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) advised against Ikechebelu acting as VC due to his interest in the permanent position. They expect the VC selection process to begin soon with a public call for applications.
