The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) at the University of Abuja has ended its 82-day strike.
Dr. Sylvanus Ugoh, ASUU’s chairperson, made the announcement at a press briefing in Abuja on Monday following a union congress.
Ugoh explained that the strike was suspended after discussions with the university’s new Governing Council. The council committed to reviewing ASUU’s grievances, which included concerns over improper staff appointments and promotions under the previous administration.
During the strike, ASUU protested various issues such as the unauthorized advertisement for the vice-chancellor position and irregular staff recruitments. Ugoh noted that the new Governing Council has agreed to cancel the previous vice-chancellor advert, restart the recruitment process according to university rules, and review recent promotions.
Ugoh emphasized that efforts to resolve these issues with the former vice-chancellor were unsuccessful, leading to the strike. However, with the council’s positive response, ASUU decided to suspend the strike to allow the university administration to address outstanding concerns.
