Transfer deadline day saw a flurry of activity, with England wingers Raheem Sterling and Jadon Sancho securing loan deals with rival Premier League clubs, while Ivan Toney made a move to Saudi Arabia
Sterling, who was told by new Chelsea boss Enzo Maresca that he was no longer needed, crossed the London divide to join Arsenal, where manager Mikel Arteta is a long-time admirer.
Arteta previously worked with Sterling during his time as assistant coach at Manchester City.
Sancho, who had a tumultuous relationship with Manchester United boss Erik ten Hag, left the club on loan for the second time, joining Chelsea to effectively replace Sterling. Sancho’s move comes despite being an €85 million signing for United.
Meanwhile, Ivan Toney completed a €47.5 million move to Al-Ahli in Saudi Arabia, bringing an end to his time at Brentford.
Toney’s career was marred by an eight-month ban for 232 breaches of betting rules, which saw him miss half of the 2023-24 season.
Brentford coach Thomas Frank wished Toney well, saying, “We thank him for so many magic moments and wish him all the best for his next chapter. Ivan leaves as a Brentford legend.”
