The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Abbas Tajudeen, has reiterated the House’s support for President Bola Tinubu’s borrowing strategy, calling it vital for economic growth and poverty alleviation
Speaking on Monday in Abuja at the 8th Annual African Network of Parliamentary Budget Offices (AN-PBO) Conference, Abbas dismissed claims that the House opposed the borrowing plan, describing such reports as “mischievous and misleading.”

He noted that the National Assembly recognises the importance of responsible borrowing to fund critical infrastructure, drive economic growth, and protect vulnerable populations. According to the Speaker, Tinubu’s administration is channeling borrowed funds into transformative projects in power, transport, and agriculture, rather than routine consumption.
Abbas emphasised that the borrowing approach is guided by prudence, transparency, and global best practices under Nigeria’s Medium-Term Debt Strategy. He added that the National Assembly is strengthening oversight mechanisms to ensure fiscal sustainability.
Highlighting institutional reforms, Abbas pointed to the creation of the National Assembly Budget and Research Office (NABRO), which provides independent analysis on borrowing, debt sustainability, and fiscal policy.
