The Kano State chapter of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) has urged Governor Abba Yusuf to formally resign from the party before joining the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC)
Governor Yusuf recently held a closed-door meeting with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, fueling speculation that he may defect to the APC. Since taking office in 2023, his administration has faced several crises, affecting governance in the state.
Speaking at a press conference in Kano on Tuesday, NNPP State Chairman Senator Elmasud Doguwa said the party respects the governor’s choice but stressed that due process must be followed.
“Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf is still a bona fide member of the NNPP, the party with a basket of fruits as its logo,” Doguwa said. “We respect him as our governor and as a member of our party. But if he chooses to leave, he has the legal right to do so. What we insist on is that he must formally tender his resignation to the party, which we have yet to receive.”
Doguwa emphasised that political party membership is an individual right but must adhere to established rules and regulations. He warned that failing to resign properly could have legal consequences, particularly in light of ongoing litigations over the party’s leadership.
“With the judgments already delivered by three courts, if Governor Yusuf defects without resigning through the bona fide NNPP, it may not go without consequences if the Supreme Court’s final ruling favours us,” he said.
He further reaffirmed that the current NNPP leadership in Kano remains the legitimate authority based on court judgments and urged the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to respect and enforce those rulings.
Doguwa concluded that the party has no intention of preventing the governor from leaving but insists that he follows proper procedure before joining another political platform.
