Nigerian lawmakers are considering a new law that could change how local government elections are run.

On Thursday, July 18, the Senate introduced a bill that would create a new federal agency to oversee these elections.

The proposed law is called the “Local Government Independent Electoral Commission (Establishment) Bill, 2024.” It’s been introduced by Senator Sani Musa, who leads the Senate’s Finance Committee. Senator Musa represents Niger East and is a member of the All Progressives Congress (APC) party.

This bill has passed its first reading in the Senate. This means it’s taken the first step in the process of becoming a law, but there are still more steps to go.

If this bill becomes law, it would mean a big change in how local elections are managed in Nigeria. Currently, each state runs its own local government elections.

The Senate has said they will provide more information about this proposed law soon.
