Senate President Godswill Akpabio has condemned the decision of organized labour to shut down the national grid, describing it as “economic sabotage” rather than a legitimate protest for a new minimum wage
He made this statement on the senate floor on Tuesday, June 4, in response to a motion by Senator Diket Plang regarding the indefinite strike by labour.
Akpabio criticized the disruption of the West African School Certificate Examination (WAEC) and hajj flights, stating that such actions were excessive and harmful.
However, he commended labour for calling off the strike to allow for negotiations.
The indefinite nationwide strike began on Monday, June 3, over the government’s failure to establish a new minimum wage for workers.
Organized labour took measures to ensure the strike’s success, including shutting down the national grid, which plunged the country into darkness.
