The Senate is set to screen Professor Joash Amupitan, President Bola Tinubu’s nominee for the position of Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), on Thursday, October 16, 2025

The announcement was made in a circular released on Wednesday by the Senate’s Director of Information, Bullah Audu Bi-Allah, and shared with journalists in Abuja.

The circular confirmed that the screening will take place in the Senate Chamber of the National Assembly Complex.

The development follows less than 24 hours after Tinubu’s letter requesting Amupitan’s confirmation was read on the Senate floor by Senate President Godswill Akpabio. According to the statement, members of the Senate Press Corps and television stations are expected to provide coverage of the event.

Amupitan’s nomination, which received endorsement from the National Council of State last week, comes as INEC prepares for a major leadership transition following Prof. Mahmood Yakubu’s decade-long tenure as chairman.

In his letter to the Senate, Tinubu noted that the appointment was made in line with Section 154(1) of the 1999 Constitution (as amended) and urged lawmakers to grant it their “usual expeditious consideration.” He described Amupitan as a “Senior Advocate of Nigeria” and requested the Senate’s confirmation of his appointment.

The nomination arrives amid ongoing discussions about INEC’s independence and credibility, particularly in the aftermath of the 2023 general elections. While the presidency has described Amupitan as “an apolitical figure of impeccable integrity,” opposition parties and civil society groups have called for a thorough and transparent confirmation process.

Thursday’s screening is expected to attract nationwide attention, as it could influence future electoral reforms and serve as a test of the administration’s commitment to credible elections ahead of 2027.
