Vice President Kashim Shettima attended the 2026 Armed Forces Celebration and Remembrance Day (AFCRD) ceremony at the Cenotaph of the Unknown Soldier, Eagle Square, Abuja, representing President Bola Tinubu, who is currently in the United Arab Emirates for the 2026 Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week (ADSW)
The AFCRD is an annual event organised by the Ministry of Defence to honour Nigerian military personnel who made the ultimate sacrifice, including those who died during the First and Second World Wars, the Nigerian Civil War, peacekeeping missions, and internal security operations, especially in the ongoing fight against terrorism.

The event also celebrates living veterans and seeks to mobilise financial and moral support for their welfare, as well as for the families of fallen service members.
Although Remembrance Day is observed worldwide, Nigeria’s commemoration reflects its unique historical journey. Initially observed on November 11, in line with other Commonwealth countries, it was later shifted to January 15 to mark the end of the Nigerian Civil War and align with national history.
The 2026 ceremony is particularly significant amid recent security gains by the Armed Forces in the North-East and other regions. It recognises the bravery, professionalism, and sacrifices of officers and men working to protect Nigeria’s citizens.
The Federal Government expressed appreciation for the gallantry of service members and urged citizens, organisations, and the private sector to continue supporting military personnel, especially wounded soldiers and families of fallen heroes, during the remembrance period and beyond.
