Today is a special day for singer Simi as she turns 38, and it feels like the perfect moment to celebrate her journey, her music, and the life she’s built over the years.
Simi who was born in Lagos back in 1988, and like many great stories, hers didn’t start with fame. It started quietly home, church, school, and a young girl who found comfort in writing songs when she was barely out of childhood.
According to the singer, life wasn’t always smooth. She lost the comfort of a complete home early on, after her parents went their separate ways. But instead of shutting down, she turned those feelings into music soft, honest, and deeply emotional songs that people would later connect with.
Before the spotlight, there was gospel music. Before the awards, there was Ogaju, her first album, and years of learning, writing, and just trying to find her sound.
Then came that turning point around 2014. Her Restless EP got people listening in a new way, and not long after, “Tiff” changed everything. Suddenly, Simi wasn’t just another voice she was a voice people remembered.
From there, her music just kept evolving. She gave us projects like Simisola, Chemistry with Falz, and Omo Charlie Champagne. Each one felt like a different layer of her story sometimes playful, sometimes deep, always real.
She also built her own space in the industry with Studio Brat, showing she wasn’t only focused on singing, but also creating and shaping her own path.
Her sound is soft but strong Afropop mixed with soul and R&B, often carried in English, Yoruba, and Pidgin. And whether it’s “Joromi,” “Duduke,” or “Smile for Me,” there’s always something personal in her voice that sticks.
Away from music, she’s stepped into TV as a judge on Nigerian Idol, tried acting, and embraced family life. Marriage to Adekunle Gold and the birth of her daughter added a new warmth to her story, one she has also shared through her music.
At 38, Simi feels like someone who didn’t rush her journey. She grew into it step by step, song by song. And maybe that’s why people still connect with her so easily.
