Tension erupted at the Unity Fountain in Abuja during a Democracy Day protest after activist and former presidential candidate Omoyele Sowore collapsed amid a standoff between demonstrators and security operatives
The incident occurred as protesters gathered to voice concerns over rising insecurity, economic challenges and what they described as poor governance across the country.
Eyewitnesses said the situation escalated when police officers moved to disperse the crowd, deploying tear gas canisters that sent protesters scrambling for safety.
Amid the chaos, Sowore collapsed, causing alarm among supporters and fellow demonstrators who rushed to his aid.
Following the incident, the activist was reportedly taken to a medical facility at an undisclosed location, where he is expected to undergo further evaluation and receive treatment.
