Sowore leads protest at MTN office over data price hike

A protest broke out in Abuja as activist and politician Omoyele Sowore led a group of demonstrators to the headquarters of MTN Nigeria, voicing anger over the rising cost of mobile data in the country.

Videos circulating online captured Sowore and other protesters chanting, “MTN ole, MTN ole!” as they marched into the premises, accusing the telecom provider of unfair pricing practices. The demonstration drew attention from passersby and quickly gained traction on social media.

The protesters expressed frustration over what they described as exploitative data tariffs, calling on the company to review its pricing structure and make internet access more affordable for Nigerians.

According to participants, the rising cost of data has made it increasingly difficult for many citizens to stay connected, particularly students, small business owners, and young professionals who rely heavily on internet services.

Sowore, addressing the crowd during the protest, emphasized the need for accountability and urged regulatory authorities to intervene. He argued that access to affordable internet is no longer a luxury but a necessity in today’s digital economy.

As of the time of reporting, MTN Nigeria had not issued an official response to the protest. The incident has, however, sparked wider conversations online about telecom pricing and consumer rights in Nigeria.
