Rapper Stormzy, 31, has been banned from driving for nine months at Wimbledon Magistrates’ Court after using a phone behind the wheel of a Rolls Royce in west Kensington in March last year
Stormzy, real name Michael Ebenezer Owuo Jr, had pleaded not guilty to using the device while driving through central London in his £225,000 vehicle Rolls Royce Wraith.
He was due to stand trial at Wimbledon Magistrates’ Court today but at the last minute changed his plea to guilty via letter.
He was caught in the act by an undercover police officer shortly after 3.30pm on March 7, 2024.
The undercover officer knocked on his ‘tinted’ passenger window and said ‘get rid of your tints and get off your phone’, Wimbledon Magistrates’ Court heard on Thursday.
He had previously pleaded guilty to driving his yellow four litre Lamborghini Urus with heavily tinted windows in Kingston-upon-Thames, near his £2.5million home, in October 2023.
The vehicle’s front windows were illegally tinted to only 4 percent light transmission, violating the 70 percent requirement.
The rapper, who was not at court, has now been banned from the roads for nine months and ordered to pay a £2,010 fine within seven days.
The Lamborghini’s use was dangerous and put ‘vulnerable road users at risk’, prosecutor Alice Holloway said on Thursday.
Owuo was stopped by officers on Coombe Lane, Kingston upon Thames, at about 12.45pm on October 17 2023, having previously been warned about the windows.
District judge Andrew Sweet said Owuo’s driving record is ‘not good’ and criticised his ‘dangerous and irresponsible’ actions.
Peter Csemiczky, defending, said Owuo accepts responsibility and apologises.
He added that the rapper has removed the tints.
Before Thursday’s hearing he had six points on his licence. He was given a further six in court today.
It comes off the back of a tough year for Stormzy which saw him split from partner Maya Jama.
