In southern China, three people lost their lives after winds tore them from their apartment windows during a recent storm.
Since Sunday, severe winds wreaked havoc in Jiangxi province, claiming seven lives and causing extensive damage to over 5,400 houses. Approximately 313,000 people were affected, with 1,600 forced to evacuate for safety.
The Chinese meteorological authority issued its highest alert level, an orange alert, on Tuesday, the first since 2013. Nanchang, the provincial capital, bore the brunt of the storm, with four deaths and numerous injuries reported.
Among the casualties were a woman in her 60s and her 11-year-old grandson, pulled from their apartment along with their mattresses by the powerful wind. Another woman, also in her 60s, suffered the same fate. All three lost their lives in the tragic incident.
Some areas experienced wind speeds equivalent to a Category I hurricane, with air conditioners ripped from buildings and over 2,000 trees uprooted.
This event adds to a series of extreme weather occurrences in China, including record-breaking heatwaves and historically low temperatures, highlighting the increasing severity of climate-related disasters.
