Suitcases with human remains found on busy bridge

The Clifton Suspension Bridge in Bristol was shut down by police after they received reports about a suspicious man with suitcases on Wednesday.

The man had left one suitcase on the bridge before officers arrived, and another was found nearby. Both suitcases are feared to contain human remains.

Avon and Somerset Police stated, “At 1.57pm yesterday (Wed 10 July) we received a report of a man with a suitcase acting suspiciously on Clifton Suspension Bridge. Officers arrived at the bridge within 10 minutes, but the man had already left the area, leaving the suitcase behind.”

A second suitcase was discovered shortly afterward. Commanding Officer Hayward-Melen commented, “Sadly, it’s believed the suitcases contain human remains.”

“We have initiated a Major Crime Investigation,” Hayward-Melen continued. “Our priority is to locate the man who left the suitcases and identify the deceased.”

The investigation revealed the person was brought to the bridge by taxi, and the vehicle has been seized. Efforts are underway to inform the deceased’s next of kin.

“Specialist officers are providing support,” Hayward-Melen assured. “A thorough search of the area is ongoing with the assistance of the National Police Air Service and HM Coastguard.”

“Forensic examinations are taking place,” Hayward-Melen added. “The bridge will remain closed during our investigations.”

The Clifton Suspension Bridge and Visitor Centre have been closed all day due to the police activity. Officers urge anyone with relevant information to contact them on 101, quoting reference 5224180010.
