Faye, previously a lesser-known figure in Senegal’s political landscape, gained prominence when opposition leader Ousmane Sonko endorsed him as his replacement in the presidential race, which is scheduled for March 24.

Sonko, a popular figure particularly among unemployed youth, is also detained and disqualified from the election due to a defamation conviction, which he contests.

Despite facing charges himself, including defamation and contempt of court, Faye remains eligible as there has been no verdict against him yet.

Considered a strong contender among the 19 presidential candidates, Faye’s campaign gained momentum after the uncertainty surrounding the election date was resolved by a court ruling following widespread protests.

Launching his campaign in his absence, members of Sonko’s dissolved Pastef party and other coalition partners have thrown their support behind Faye, including high-profile figures like former prime minister Aminata Toure, who previously broke ties with President Macky Sall’s ruling coalition.

Supporters, adorned with bright bracelets and campaign posters featuring Faye and Sonko, have joined the campaign caravan traversing the country, demonstrating unwavering commitment to their cause.

Despite the challenges posed by Faye’s detention, his coalition has outlined ambitious plans for institutional reforms, including the creation of a new national currency and the renegotiation of mining and energy contracts, signalling significant changes if Faye assumes office.
