Veteran Nollywood actor Sylvester Madu has responded to online backlash and speculations about his alleged involvement in the okirika (second-hand clothing) business

The actor drew attention in 2023 when a viral video surfaced displaying him sorting clothes in a local market in Enugu, prompting rumors that he had fallen on hard times.
In a new video shared online, Madu addressed the controversy, expressing frustration over the negative perception surrounding okirika.
“People talk about okirika like it’s something dirty,” he said. “About 80% of Nigerians use okirika. The cars we drive, some of the TVs in your homes, even some of your gadgets—they’re all okirika. It’s not just about clothes.”
Madu went on to clarify that while he was seen around the market scene, he is not involved in selling okirika, contrary to what some reports suggested.
“I’ve said it before—I’m not selling okirika,” he explained. “And that’s not to look down on the business. There’s nothing wrong with it. But don’t twist what I said in that interview.”
The actor emphasized that his comments were misinterpreted and called for an end to the stigma associated with second-hand goods.
