Sauer was swimming with a friend when she felt herself being pulled underwater and bitten by the shark on March 15.

She sustained 40 puncture wounds and needed over 160 stitches for injuries to her torso, back, abdomen, and thighs.

Sauer’s father received a distressing call informing him of the attack, prompting her swift transport to the hospital.

Despite the shock, Sauer managed to swim back to shore and credited her surf life-saving training for her calm response.

She underwent surgery at Queensland Children’s Hospital in Brisbane and is on track for a full recovery.

Reflecting on the incident, Sauer emphasized the importance of staying calm and getting out of the water during a shark encounter.

Her ordeal highlights the unpredictable nature of shark attacks, even in relatively shallow waters close to shore.
