A woman in Texas is seeking over $1 million in damages from prosecutors and Starr County for wrongly accusing her of murder due to a self-induced abortion.
Lizelle Gonzalez faced murder charges in Starr County, Texas, in 2022 after terminating her pregnancy using abortion medication at 19 weeks. Despite Texas law not allowing criminal charges against individuals for their own abortions, Gonzalez was arrested and spent two nights in jail before the charges were dropped.
Gonzalez alleges that prosecutors misrepresented facts and violated her rights, leading to unjust charges that profoundly impacted her life.
The lawsuit targets Gocha Allen Ramirez, the Starr County district attorney, Alexandria Lynn Barrera, the assistant district attorney, and the county itself. Ramirez has faced professional consequences for his actions, including a fine and probationary suspension of his license.
Gonzalez’s ordeal highlights the challenges faced by women in accessing reproductive healthcare, particularly in states with restrictive abortion laws like Texas.
