A 79-year-old US tourist was tragically killed in Zambia’s Kafue National Park when an elephant charged at the vehicle she was travelling in during a safari.
The incident occurred on Saturday, with another woman sustaining injuries and receiving medical attention in South Africa. Four others suffered minor injuries.
According to Wilderness, the company organizing the safari, the elephant unexpectedly charged at the vehicle during a wildlife viewing excursion.
Despite the guide’s experience, the vehicle couldn’t be moved out of harm’s way quickly due to the terrain and vegetation.
The company’s CEO expressed condolences to the victim’s family and assured support for those involved in the incident.
Authorities dispatched a helicopter to the scene for investigation.
The deceased, identified as 79-year-old Gail Mattson, was described by her family as adventurous and beloved. Her passing was characterized as a “freak accident.”
Zambia’s Kafue National Park, renowned for its diverse wildlife, is popular among safari enthusiasts, though tragedies like this are rare.
