Minnesota Governor Tim Walz made his first public remarks following his and Kamala Harris’ tough defeat in the 2024 presidential election, pledging to continue advocating for Minnesota as Donald Trump prepares to assume office.
Walz spoke back home, surrounded by supporters, after a heartfelt introduction from his wife, Gwen, who was visibly emotional.
“I don’t know about you, but I’ve had a week,” Walz joked as he opened his speech.
The governor gained international attention after Vice President Kamala Harris chose him as her running mate last August.
Walz, 60, expressed gratitude to Harris for her trust, for running a positive campaign, and for her friendship.
He also thanked his Minnesota and campaign teams and the supporters who backed their Democratic ticket.
“It’s hard to lose. It’s hard to understand why so many of our fellow citizens, people we’ve fought so hard for, ended up choosing a different path. It’s hard to process what that path looks like for the next four years,” Walz admitted.
Walz encouraged people to take time with loved ones but assured them, “Whenever you’re ready to get back in that fight, I’ll be right here, ready to fight alongside you.”
Despite the disappointment, Walz shared that he feels more inspired, motivated, and “fired up for what’s possible in this country” than ever.
Reflecting on his campaign travels across the nation, he observed that Americans share common desires—meaningful work, quality education, affordable healthcare, and above all, “the freedom to live their lives the way they want.”
