President Bola Tinubu has approved the relocation of 29 correctional centres from urban areas across Nigeria due to security concerns

Minister of Interior Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo announced the decision on Friday during the unveiling of new operational vehicles for the Nigerian Correctional Service. He explained that urban development has encroached on many of these facilities, reducing the legally required buffer zones and increasing security risks.
Among the affected centres are those in Ikoyi, Apapa, Agodi, Enugu, and Suleja. The minister highlighted the urgency of the move, citing examples like the Ikoyi Correctional Centre, which shares a fence with a polo club, as a clear indication that these facilities are no longer in suitable locations.
The relocation plan is part of a broader effort to reform the correctional system and improve security for both inmates and the general public.
